This Sunday March 5th please join Dog Star Books author K. Ceres Wright, RDSP author and editor John Edward Lawson, and others from Diverse Writers and Artists of Speculative Fiction for a discussion of Jordan Peele’s smash success Get Out. From the role of minorities in horror, to the controversy surrounding the film, to sociopolitical analysis…we want to hear your thoughts!

About DWASF

Diverse Writers and Artists of Speculative Fiction is a group of creators who promote diversity in speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) books, stories, poetry, art, film, and pop culture through the inclusion of characters, myths, images, and traditions of diverse ethnic cultures not commonly portrayed in mainstream media. We give voice to multicultural creatives who go beyond the ordinary.

We hope to achieve our mission by presenting at writing or speculative fiction conventions, art expos, film festivals, and other related events; mentoring other writers and artists; promoting members’ writing and art; hosting events; and sponsoring publications to showcase the work of member writers and artists.

The demographics of the United States are changing, with 36% of the population identifying as Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander, or a combination thereof. As well, a recent Pew study identified the most likely reader of books as college-educated Black women.

With this demographic shift in readers, aspiring writers and artists of color have an eager audience, and a plethora of stories to tell based on myriad cultures, backgrounds, myths, and folktales.

About the Participants

K. Ceres Wright (Founder and President)
Ceres received her master’s degree in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA, and her novel, Cog, was her thesis novel for the program. Wright’s science fiction poem, “Doomed,” was a nominee for the Rhysling Award, the Science Fiction Poetry Association’s highest honor. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Sycorax’s Daughters, Genesis: An Anthology of Black Science Fiction; Many Genres, One Craft; Far Worlds; Dark Universe; The City; The Museum of All Things Awesome and that Go Boom, and the upcoming Letters to Octavia Butler.

John Edward Lawson (Vice President)
John Edward Lawson is an author, editor and poet living in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. He is the author of 16 books of fiction and poetry, and numerous chapbooks. Over 500 of his poems, stories, and articles have been published in magazines, anthologies, literary journals, and newspapers worldwide. John was a winner of the 2001 Fiction International Emerging Writers Competition; in addition to being a finalist for the Stoker Award (2006, Superior Achievement in Poetry) and the Wonderland Award for Bizarro Fiction (2007, collected fiction), other award nominations include the Dwarf Stars Award, the Elgin Award, the Pushcart Prize, and the Rhysling Award. John is also a founding editor of Raw Dog Screaming Press.
