COVER REVEAL: Children of Demeter

Raw Dog Screaming Press (RDSP) is feeling groovy about showcasing this original cover design by popular horror artist Lynne Hansen for the novel Children of Demeter, the sophomore work from 2020 Bram Stoker Award Nominated author EV Knight. Children of Demeter is a standalone novel set to be released on August 5, 2021.

“I was so excited when Raw Dog Screaming Press contacted me about Children of Demeter! I love creating art for fresh voices like EV’s,” said Hansen. “The novel swept me away into a lush and twisted world. The book features an unusual mural from the 1970s so I wanted to do something that evoked those great psychedelic art nouveau posters of the era. If you look closely, you may find a monster or two hidden among the flowers—an apt metaphor for the story EV Knight wraps around the reader.”

Knight explores the 1970s and the cult vibe in this story in a way that almost screamed for the cover to be ripped also from that era for full effect on the reader. RDSP is pleased that Hansen was able to create not only Knight’s vision but to bring the feel of the hippie decade to life, inviting readers into the madness.

“I knew I wanted a psychedelic look to the cover inspired by the Children of Demeter cult,” Knight said. “Lynne knocked it right out of the park. She took so many nuances from the story, including the color scheme, and used them to create this cover. I have never seen a cover with similar art on a horror novel, so I am excited to see the reception for it. That’s not to say there aren’t aspect of the horror in the cover because if you look hard enough, you’ll find them. I would be proud for folks to judge my book by its cover and only hope the story can live up to the amazing art Lynne has created for it.”

What is Children of Demeter About?

In 1973, a commune of almost twenty-five people—mostly women and children—disappeared overnight from the small town of West Burma, WI. What happened to the hippie Children of Demeter has remained a mystery until this day, which is what draws Sarah Bisset, a sociologist on sabbatical, to the place.

With her personal life in ruins Sarah is more than happy to lose herself in the secrets of the isolated farmhouse, but soon those revelations have her questioning her own identity, and even her sanity. Is she prepared to navigate the labyrinth of lies and cover ups to expose the truth concealed inside Demeter House despite the consequences?

Knight said, “there are ghosts in this book, memories that haunt us are like ghosts, unanswered questions about our past can haunt us too. In Children of Demeter, there is no Nature vs Nurture, it’s Nature and Nurture vs Us.”
