Editor’s Block

Betcha never heard of that one. That’s because there is no shortage of works needing to be edited. Although it’s the least exciting step in the creative process it’s one of the most important.

In the case of RDSP we often have two or three people read over a manuscript. I’m about 3/4 of the way through editing A Dirge for the Temporal now and I’ve been amazed how much difference the little changes make. In fact, there are really no major plot points or theme difficulties to tackle. What I look for are awkward sentences and confusing sections where the meaning isn’t clear. But it’s exactly those type of things that make a piece seem raw and unpublished.

The bad thing about doing a lot of editing is once your mind gets in that mode you find yourself editing everything from billboards to song lyrics in your head.
