Not bad for 5 years

I recently had to write a little description about RDSP and was surprised at how much there was to say about our press. I guess I don’t normally think about how far we’ve come, just how much further there is to go.

The Dog’s Pedigree

Raw Dog Screaming Press was founded in 2003 by John Edward Lawson and Jennifer Barnes in Hyattsville, Maryland. The company grew out of an online zine called The Dream People which is still published at www.dreampeople.org under new editorship.

“When we started The Dream People we were amazed at how many talented authors out there were unpublished simply because their work did not fit neatly into one category or another,” says Lawson. Barnes adds, “What we wanted to do was publish the unpublishable, put out books that other publishers wouldn’t touch because they cross genres, mix conventions or just don’t play by the rules.”

Almost five years later Raw Dog Screaming has published 18 novels, 14 collections (including 2 books of poetry), 10 anthologies and one CD/audiobook. RDSP works have been finalists for the Bram Stoker Award, nominated for the Rhysling award, the Pushcart Prize, and the British Fantasy Society’s Best Short Fiction Award. Many stories published by RDSP have received honorable mentions in The Year’s Best Fantasy & Horror and The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror.

Our books have been reviewed in Publisher’s Weekly, Library Journal, Rain Taxi, American Book Review and Asimov’s as well as many other publications.

This year RDSP launches two new imprints: Guide Dog Books for non-fiction titles and Imaginary Books for children’s titles.
