They raised the minimum rate for media mail another 10 cents. I know it doesn’t sound like much but with the amount of books we mail out it makes a difference. Five years ago, when we started, media rate was $1.42. This is why we aren’t able to do many multi-author projects. The more contributors there are the more expensive it becomes.

I am trying to stay optimistic but with the price of everything rising I’m pretty sure people will continue to cut back on discretionary spending for things like books. We’ve got a really good crop of books coming out this year, probably the best yet, but I think it’s going to be even tougher than usual to catch people’s interest.

I guess the main thing is how long is this non-recession going to last? There’s no way to know. That’s why I plan to celebrate the hell out of RDSP’s 5 year anniversary.

  1. Yeah, we went to the post office yesterday and spent nearly three hundred dollars for posting a few boxes and envelopes, and it’s really starting to get annoying, particularly for overseas magazine subscriptions. We have to keep increasing the shipping costs, on the website. This will impact magazines more than anything else, I would suspect.

  2. I hate how they only make a big deal about the cost of the first class stamp going up one cent. The rest of the changes always get me by surprise.

I think you’re right about magazines though. It’s a disaster for that kind of thing.

  3. Wait until next May, as the current increases were done, probably without projecting for the gas increases . . . which means it’ll be worse in 2009.
