RDSP closed to subs at the end of the year. I think we were only accepting subs for about 3 months. Our long-suffering intern, Philip Overby, still has more than 50 to get through and I know he’s already done quite a few. I figure we must have received 70+ manuscripts. And we were only accepting novels/novellas. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if we were accepting short story collections. When we started the company I wanted to always be open to submissions but I can see that would be a quagmire we’d never pull ourselves out of.

  1. I both anticipate and dread the time when I’ll be able to afford to buy full novels and novellas and open to submissions myself (I want to get enough experience with these short story anthologies before I start asking for new work – and I want to be able to afford to pay an advance – just to make sure that whoever I do publish gets a good deal out of it)

But yeah I can see this being a headache, especially when Philip was very good in regards to critiquing my work when he rejected it.
