    Book Promotion Ideas

    I’ve been reading tons of books on book promotion and marketing, so I figured I’d share a couple book titles that will give you a lot of great ideas.

    ‘1001 Ways to Market Your Books (for Authors and Publishers) by John Kremer is a the meatiest tome on the subject I’ve come across. If you’re only going to read one book on the subject, this is your best bet.

    ‘Guerilla Marketing for Writers’ by Jay Conrad Levinson, Rick Frishman, and Michael Larson is my second favorite. As the title suggests, these techniques are more ‘outside the box’, and handily cross-indexed by which are most effective for fiction or non-fiction, as well as by whether the suggestion is something you can do for free, at low cost, or higher cost.

    ‘The Web-Savvy Author (Book Promotion with a High-Tech Twist)’ by Patrice Anne-Rutledge is another good one, geared specifically towards book promotion online. There is a good chapter on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) which might help get the rankings for John’s books higher in the search engines at Amazon and elsewhere. It also covers blogging, podcasts, websites, RSS feeds, Advertising, and marketing. Alot of good ideas, and it breaks the information down pretty well for those like me who aren’t the most technically-savvy webheads around.

    The techniques I’ve learned from these books (which are the best of about 11 I’ve read) have served me well so far. I wish I could point out the specific techniques that work the best, but I don’t have a book published yet and haven’t been able to try most of them. I have used the ideas to promote myself, however, and already have a mailing list of people who want to read my books and asked to be notified when they’re available. I have also used Myspace to network and build a ‘fanbase’. It’s a thankless task at times, but worth it in the end I’m sure.
