The money went out to cover the cost of the Play Dead press run and the Westermead special edition. Unfortunately I didn’t realize that Lightning Source didn’t actually bill our credit card last month so all the orders we’ve been placing for books recently wound up on this bill, almost $4000. It’s too bad all these expenditures had to come at the same time. Luckily we don’t have any more major things to pay for but there are always expenses. This makes me nervous but I’m just crossing my fingers and hoping everything will work out as planned.

  1. Hang in there. Cash flow is the hardest part of this buisness. Shit hitting all at once, like a class 3 hurricane, is more common then not. Keep your head down. Pay what absolutely has to be paid to keep the lights on. Put everyone else off, but be upfront with them, as to exactly why things are late, and when they can reasonable expect payment. don’t be optimisitc about the dates you give people. Give them a far away date, and pay early, instead of giving them a near date, and end up late again.

More often then not, people (writers, artsits, designers, etc) will cut you slack, as long as they know whats going on, and know that they will eventually get paid.

The most often get cranky when they were epxecting money, and don’t get it. If you are going to be late, tell people in advance, so that they can plan for it.

Hunker down, and hang in there. Things will get better.

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve spent $2,400 in the last two weeks on unexpected car repairs. And we’re getting ready to put an offer down on a house tomorrow!

I hope it all works out for the best for you. For the record, I deeply appreciate RDSP’s timely payment policy; it truly sets you apart from the rest and marks you as best-of-the-best professionals.

  3. Money is a very temporary illusion. Sometimes you have it, sometimes you don’t. Right now you don’t.

    Hang in there man!

Thanks for the advice! So far I haven’t broken any promises to anyone and hope to keep it that way but sometimes that means transferring personal funds into the business which makes me a little nervous with a baby on the way. It’s good to know that a lot of times people will cut you a break and I can definitely see the benefits of giving far away dates and then hoping to pay them off early.

  5. Ouch!

Car repairs suck. It was really having to get a new car that screwed things up for us. Thanks for the vote of confidence though. We’re glad to know the authors appreciate us because it’s easy to take timely paymen for granted sometimes because that’s really how it should be but in publishing it so often doesn’t work out like that.

  6. so true

Sometimes I forget that money is really just a concept and not a very exciting one at that!
