Receiving the Specialty Press Award

Blog
Grand Rapids, MI • May 11, 2019 At StokerCon in Grand Rapids the HWA recognized Raw Dog Screaming Press with the Specialty Press of the Year Award. We had known for several months that we would be receiving this award, which has been both humbling and exciting and were looking forward to accepting it. Watch the speech (transcript below) However, I didn't think actually receiving the award would change anything. But I was wrong. As the weekend went on there was a growing sense of respect for our press and with it, I felt a growing responsibility. After giving our acceptance speech there was a palpable feeling of good will towards our work. In publishing there is a sense that you are laboring in obscurity but it became clear that…

The author describes it as The Stand meets Fatal Attraction, though it also has a Four Horseman of the Apocalypse feel with a feminist twist. “I needed to talk about what it means to be a woman in this world,” Knight said about writing the book. “Each of the four ‘whores’ in this book represent different challenges women face or can face in their daily lives. Battles we fight with ourselves, with men,…

Steel Time Blog Tour: Second Annual State of the Empires

Blog
But wait, you might ask: If book 4 of the Steel Empires series is coming out this week, shouldn’t this be the FOURTH Annual State of the Empires? Well, that’s easy to answer. I didn’t come up with this clever idea until last year, when book 3 came out. While I wish I could retcon this blog series to make it the fourth post (or even the fifth or fifteenth, depending on when you consider the origins of this series), we’re stuck with what we’ve got. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t been a busy year, or that I don't have a lot of stuff to catch you up on. So, here goes. The obvious things first. Steel Time comes out tomorrow. Yay! I was so excited to talk to you…

Undercover: The Meaning Behind the Image This week J.L. Gribble revealed the cover for STEEL TIME on her blog to much approval. We are always excited to share covers and particularly so when the artwork comes from Brad Sharp. While his covers are eye-catching from a distance, what really sets them apart is the level of detail and meaning he infuses into each one. So I thought it would be fun to break down the various elements he's included in this cover using a few dramatic slices. For the full reveal you'll have to visit Gribble's blog though! In this section we see two swordswomen standing back-to-back. On the left is Victory, a retired mercenary and vampire. On the right is her daughter Toria, a human warrior-mage who is unexpectedly…

Nightly Owl, Fatal Raven Cover Reveal

Blog
Raw Dog Screaming Press is proud to publish the fantasy novel Nightly Owl, Fatal Raven this June. We are excited to show readers the cover and announce its availability for pre-order! Nightly Owl, Fatal Raven, by Jessica McHugh combines speculative world-building and a deep appreciation of the works of Shakespeare. This is a Fantasy novel with a fully-realized world of brutal struggles, but it is also crafted with lyricism. While the female protagonist who fights to change a heartless and cruel world will be familiar to readers of Dystopian fiction, the brutality and bitter battles echo the Grimdark movement in Fantasy and add an epic feel to this gritty adventure. McHugh does not shrink from portraying the ugly realties of war but there is a kernel of hope amid all…
