Ridley Scott, S. Craig Zahler and Me

Blog
On Publishing a Book that Will be a Movie Do you know what’s crazy surreal? Seeing something you wrote paraphrased and referenced in The Hollywood Reporter. Recently the news broke that Wraiths of the Broken Land, a novel written by S. Craig Zahler, published by Raw Dog Screaming Press, is going to be made into a movie for 20th Century Fox by Ridley Scott, Drew Goddard and the amazing team behind The Martian. We had known this deal was possible and had a little forewarning, but it didn’t prepare us for the avalanche of news that poured in once the deal was announced. I found myself reading article after article and most of them had something similar to The Hollywood Reporter’s: “[Wraiths of the Broken Land] has been described as…

Underwater Fistfight is Here!

Underwater Fistfight is Here!

Blog
Today is launch day for the new poetry collection from Matt Betts. As editor Stephanie Wytovich will surely tell you Underwater Fistfight is like no other poetry collection you've read! Betts is a pirate-poet who takes science fiction and throws it in the brig with horror while he sits outside the cell, laughing as they duke it out. He’s a regular Davy Jones, a sailor’s devil, claiming the lives of these poems and dragging them down to the locker to dissect, inspect, and sift through their stories and characters like plunder. Excerpt: The Great Zombie Pyramid Scheme The toughest part is convincing those first two people. After that, everyone is more than happy to bite their friends. Coming May 2016 Our 4th poetry collection from Stephanie M. Wytovich will be released in May. All the poems included are exclusive to this volume and have not been published elsewhere! Pre-order HERE The Brothel Theme Brothels are places that are constructed as—sometimes legal, but mostly illegal—houses to buy and/or pay for sex. Run by a madam, typically an older woman who houses and provides for her girls, the business attracts clients of all shapes and sizes, all genders and behaviors. Sometimes business conducts itself without concern, a steady in-and-out, a quick fuck and profit, but other times, there are problems, problems that arise because of, disobedience, greed, anger. So what happens when a girl gets confused and she starts to like the pain? When the idea of murder turns…

2 RDSP Books Make the Bram Stoker Ballot for 2015

Blog
We're excited to announce that two of last year's releases have made it into the final ballot for the Bram Stoker Awards. An Exorcism of Angels, a poetry collection by Stephanie Wytovich, and While the Black Stars Burn, a short fiction collection from Lucy A. Snyder have both made the final cut. Congratulations to these talented authors and all the others on the ballot! View the entire ballot here. Praise for While the Black Stars Burn “Malevolent lineages and emotionally fraught familial relationships propel the plots of most of the 13 genre-spanning stories in Snyder’s strong collection….Snyder excels in her depictions of characters struggling desperately—and often futilely—to extricate themselves from terrifying snares set by loved ones. Readers will find her stories a cut above most other tales of interpersonal and…

My Top 10 Reads of 2015

Blog
10 Great Books I Read in 2015 In 2014 I easily met my first reading goal of 52 books and had to move it up to 100. So for 2015 I challenged myself to 115 books. What was I thinking?! At one point I was 17 books behind schedule and considered giving up, but hate to let a goal go. So in the last few months of the year I limited myself to only short works (but still novel length) and managed to meet my goal. In fact, because I forgot to set dates on two of my completed books, I actually wound up with a total of 117. That was definitely too much and a lot of the pleasure went out of it just trying to keep that pace.…

The Underside of the Rainbow Cover Reveal

Blog
Unveiling the Rainbow Artist Steven Archer has created a raw, textured cover to match B.E. Burkhead's gritty, and unapologetic realism. In this poetry collection Burkhead shows readers what happens when they take off their rose-colored glasses and look at the world around them. Instead of fields of freshly grown flowers, he writes of alleys with broken bottles and hypodermic needles, no happily-ever-afters, just blunt and honest truths, sometimes with endings, sometimes without. Just as life doesn’t hand out answers, Burkhead doesn’t sugarcoat its truths. Coming in July You can pre-order this collection now! "Underside took me on an unexpected emotional journey I relished long after reading. To me that’s the mark of a damn fine collection–and one that will remain in my library forever.” —Jessica McHugh, author of The Green…

4 Lessons Learned Hosting a Writing Retreat

Blog
So far we have hosted two writing retreats, both held at Bourbon Ridge in Hocking Hills, OH. I learned a lot about hosting writing retreats during our first one but there were new lessons discovered during the second. Here are a few of them: Every group is different Our second retreat had a totally different vibe than the first. Part of that was because we had an extra day so things were less frenetic. But we also had mostly new attendees (only 3 of us attended the inaugural retreat) and they interacted in different ways. There seemed to be a social collaboration between writers in the second group and a tendency toward group jokes and a collective mythology. The first group was more likely to talk over meals and spend…

Italian artist Daniele Serra has been commissioned to…

On Publishing Bram Stoker Award Winning Books

Blog
RDSP has had a few brushes with the Bram Stoker award in the past: 100 Jolts was a finalist for fiction collection in 2004, The Troublesome Amputee for Poetry Collection in 2006, Cursed was a finalist for novel in 2009 and Hysteria for poetry collection in 2013. I'd long ago learned to be happy with a release being a finalist and leave it at that. So when we discovered that 3 of our titles were finalists we celebrated like crazy! Eventually we also decided to make the trip to the World Horror Convention (our first time back in 8 years). I was excited and relieved that the books were in different categories and not in competition against each other. But, looking at the strength of each category, I had no…

Small Press Spotlight: Deadite Press

Blog
Meet Jeff Burk from Deadite Press March was Small Press Month, and during that time we ran a series featuring many of the other independent publishers in operation. These small press spotlights were so popular that we have decided to continue them as a regular feature, and today we bring you Jeff Burk of Deadite Press. Give a brief overview of what you publish. I am the head editor of Deadite Press and have published almost ninety titles. Deadite focuses on extreme and cult horror. We’re the ones all about sex, violence, pus, and monsters. Think grindhouse flims, EC Comics, and hardcore punk – all mashed together. What inspired you to go into publishing? Really just a love for horror books that I thought weren’t reaching as wide of an…

Women in Horror Spotlight: Andrea Marie

Blog
Andrea Marie on Horror Q: How did you first get into acting and modeling? Which do you prefer?  I have always aspired to do both, but modeling came first when a photographer friend and I decided to put a portfolio together in 2006. Then in 2011, I started building up film and television contacts and it sort of took off from there. Acting always interested me from a very young age, but I was not comfortable to do so until I started modeling. The modeling certainly helped build up the self esteem and confidence that allowed me to perform. Q: Tell us about a few of the projects you've been involved in.  The latest completed project is Fuzzy Monkey Fims' "Milfs VS Zombies", which will debut at the Scares that Care weekend convention…

Small Press Spotlight: Omnium Gatherum Books

Blog
Omnium Gatherum Books joins us to discuss publishing as part of the Small Press Month celebration. Give a brief overview of what you publish. Omnium Gatherum publishes dark fantasy, weird fiction and literary thrillers. When selecting titles, I look for characters with distinct voices. Most have an unexpected point of view or explore a mythology or psychology that isn’t standard in genre fiction. What inspired you to go into publishing? There’s a saying that goes something like, don’t quit your day job. Authors rarely make a living writing fiction. I hate that defeatist attitude so much. Why does creative work have to be pushed to the side? Omnium Gatherum is still a relatively new company and no one is earning a full-time living yet, but we still have hope. And…
