The Underside of the Rainbow Cover Reveal
Unveiling the Rainbow Artist Steven Archer has created a raw, textured cover to match B.E. Burkhead’s gritty, and unapologetic realism. In this poetry collection Burkhead shows readers what happens when they take off their rose-colored glasses and look at the world around them. Instead of fields of freshly grown flowers, he writes of alleys with broken bottles and hypodermic needles, no happily-ever-afters, just blunt and honest truths, sometimes with endings, sometimes without. Just as life doesn’t hand out answers, Burkhead doesn’t sugarcoat its truths. Coming in July You can pre-order this collection now! “Underside took me on an unexpected emotional...
Reader’s Choice Poll Results
The votes are in! The readers have voted and picked the books that will go on to the final ballot. The vote was supposed to choose the top 4 books, however, we had a tie for fourth place which resulted in 5 books moving on to the final ballot. These books will be read and ranked by a panel of judges to declare the winner. The winner will be announced on October 24th during DogCon in Philadelphia. Note that the ballot incorrectly listed Greenshift when it should have said Ambasadora. Both books are by Heidi Ruby Miller and take place...
4 Lessons Learned Hosting a Writing Retreat
So far we have hosted two writing retreats, both held at Bourbon Ridge in Hocking Hills, OH. I learned a lot about hosting writing retreats during our first one but there were new lessons discovered during the second. Here are a few of them: Every group is different Our second retreat had a totally different vibe than the first. Part of that was because we had an extra day so things were less frenetic. But we also had mostly new attendees (only 3 of us attended the inaugural retreat) and they interacted in different ways. There seemed to be a...
Book Deal Announcement
5-20-15 • Continuing a Successful Publishing Relationship Raw Dog Screaming Press is pleased to announce that it has signed a deal with Lucy A. Snyder to publish her next fiction collection titled While the Black Stars Burn. This deal comes on the heels of Snyder receiving the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Fiction Collection for Soft Apocalypses which RDSP published in 2014. RDSP sees While the Black Stars Burn as something of a sequel to Soft Apocalypses and hopes to build on the momentum of the first book. This new collection is heavily influenced by Lovecraft and...
On Publishing Bram Stoker Award Winning Books
RDSP has had a few brushes with the Bram Stoker award in the past: 100 Jolts was a finalist for fiction collection in 2004, The Troublesome Amputee for Poetry Collection in 2006, Cursed was a finalist for novel in 2009 and Hysteria for poetry collection in 2013. I’d long ago learned to be happy with a release being a finalist and leave it at that. So when we discovered that 3 of our titles were finalists we celebrated like crazy! Eventually we also decided to make the trip to the World Horror Convention (our first time back in 8 years)....

Small Press Spotlight: Deadite Press
Meet Jeff Burk from Deadite Press March was Small Press Month, and during that time we ran a series featuring many of the other independent publishers in operation. These small press spotlights were so popular that we have decided to continue them as a regular feature, and today we bring you Jeff Burk of Deadite Press. Give a brief overview of what you publish. I am the head editor of Deadite Press and have published almost ninety titles. Deadite focuses on extreme and cult horror. We’re the ones all about sex, violence, pus, and monsters. Think grindhouse flims, EC Comics,...
Women in Horror Spotlight: Andrea Marie
Andrea Marie on Horror Q: How did you first get into acting and modeling? Which do you prefer? I have always aspired to do both, but modeling came first when a photographer friend and I decided to put a portfolio together in 2006. Then in 2011, I started building up film and television contacts and it sort of took off from there. Acting always interested me from a very young age, but I was not comfortable to do so until I started modeling. The modeling certainly helped build up the self esteem and confidence that allowed me to perform. Q: Tell us...
Small Press Spotlight: Omnium Gatherum Books
Omnium Gatherum Books joins us to discuss publishing as part of the Small Press Month celebration. Give a brief overview of what you publish. Omnium Gatherum publishes dark fantasy, weird fiction and literary thrillers. When selecting titles, I look for characters with distinct voices. Most have an unexpected point of view or explore a mythology or psychology that isn’t standard in genre fiction. What inspired you to go into publishing? There’s a saying that goes something like, don’t quit your day job. Authors rarely make a living writing fiction. I hate that defeatist attitude so much. Why does creative work...
Small Press Spotlight: Dream Write Publishing
Joining us for today’s Small Press Spotlight is Canadian publisher Dream Write Publishing. Give a brief overview of what you publish. Dream Write Publishing prides itself on publishing a wide range of genres from children’s picture books to poetry to fiction and non-fiction novels. We hold true to our mandate of aiding authors to realize their publishing dreams, therefore each manuscript is reviewed for its uniqueness, individuality and the goal of the author. What inspired you to go into publishing? As a life long lover of words, I was driven to not only share my words but also help other...

Small Press Spotlight: Down & Out Books
Small Press Spotlight: Down and Out Books is bringing the hardest of hard-edged crime fiction to a new generation of readers The Down & Out Manifesto We are lovers of quality, well-written stories of crime. We look for and publish great writers … some you’ve heard of, some you haven’t. These are folks you should be reading. All titles are available as ebooks and several as trade paperbacks. History of the Press Publisher Eric Campbell describes himself as a fan first and has always enjoyed crime fiction, hardboiled, noir and detective novels. In his search for great reading he befriended a...
Small Press Spotlight: Rooster Republic Press
Today’s spotlight is on Rooster Republic, a relatively new press in a relatively new genre, Bizarro. Give a brief overview of what you publish. Mostly bizarro but we’ve also dabbled in poetry and horror. As long as it’s strange (and good) it has a home at Rooster. What inspired you to go into publishing? I learned the business while working as a Staff Accountant at a small book factory named Thomson-Shore. I saw the way traditional publishers did business and I thought I could do it better. Honestly, from the outside looking in, publishing looks pretty easy. I was so...

Small Press Spotlight: Anti-Oedipus Press
Publisher of the unexpected Anti-Oedipus Press joins us to discuss publishing in our Small Press Month series. Give a brief overview of what you publish. Anti-Oedipus Press is a publisher of literary “schiz-flows” that aspire to chart new boundaries in narrative and theory. Taking our cue from the poststructuralist writings of Deleuze and Guattari, AOP publishes authors who write to the Nth power, making rhizomes instead of roots and sculpting innovative bodies without organs in the form of fiction, nonfiction, literary criticism, cultural studies and pop philosophy. I am the editor-in-chief of AOP, which is a sibling imprint of Raw...
Small Press Spotlight: Despumation Press
To continue our celebration of March being Small Press Month we shares some thoughts from Kriscinda Lee Everitt, founder of Despumation Press. Give a brief overview of what you publish. This is a little difficult, because we’ve only really just started. We began with a journal (Despumation) of short fiction and poetry based on, or inspired by, heavy metal songs and themes. We are currently gearing up to put out longer works, novellas and novels. We’ll be looking for metal-related MSs, but also non-metal literary MSs. Once we see how that goes, we’ll probably open up to more genre writing....
Small Press Spotlight: Atticus Books
The third entry in our Small Press Month series is the unusual literary publisher Atticus Books. Give a brief overview of what you publish. Our mission at Atticus Books is to deliver a first-class experience to the reader. Period. We specialize in genre-busting literary fiction—i.e., titles that fall between the cracks of genre fiction and compelling narratives that feature memorable main characters. We publish books and regularly post original short stories, poems, literary essays and creative non-fiction on our website. What inspired you to go into publishing? Serendipity shined her bright light upon the publisher’s path on a journey he...
Small Press Spotlight: Valancourt Books
Our second publisher spotlight for Small Press Month is the dynamic Valancourt Books. Give a brief overview of what you publish. At Valancourt, we specialize in the rediscovery of rare, neglected and out-of-print fiction. We have a strong focus on horror and supernatural but also bring back classic works of literary fiction. What inspired you to go into publishing? James and I had an interest in rare Gothic literature from early on. We were amazed by the lack of texts available to academic, scholars and general readers. Aside from a handful of titles published by university presses, there was nothing...
